Cultural Highlights

There are a great number of museums on the French Riviera. Here are just a few:

Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain de Nice:

Nice's museum of modern and contemporary art houses a collection of contemporary and avant-guarde art from Europe and the US from the 60s to now.

Musée Matisse:

Visitors can discover the collections of works by Henri Matisse and the Hotel Regina where Matisse lived. Contains the artist's personal collection including the most famous canvasses, virtually all of his sculptures, drawings, gouache cut-outs and engravings. The Museum is housed in a 17th C. Genoese villa.

Musée National Fernand Leger in Biot

Over 450 works covering the entire career of Fernand Léger, from 1905 to 1955

Musée National Pablo Picasso, la Guerre et la Paix in Valauris

Housed in a 12th-C. Romanesque chapel, this museum contains two Picasso's famous monumental compositions "War and Peace" (125 m2) representing themes dear to the artist in the period immediately after the War. It was also in Vallauris that Picasso discovered the art of ceramics and pottery

Musée Picasso – Antibes

While searching for a studio, Pablo Picasso came across the Château Grimaldi and decided to work there in 1946. He completed dozens of works that he later donated to the Museum.

Fondation Marguerite et Aime Maeght - St Paul de Vence 

A must for both its permanent collection and temporary exhibits. Painters and sculptors participated in its architectural design, creating artworks to complement the building and its gardens : Chagall's mosaic, Braque's stained-glass windows, Giacometti's sculptures, Miro's labyrinth, Calder's mobile. Discover the works of some of the greatest modern and contemporary artists in the gardens after your tour of the building.

 Musée Renoir - Cagnes Sur Mer

The Domaine des Collettes, and its park enhanced by the olive-trees so beloved by the artist, was the last home of Auguste Renoir. Preserved as is with its original furniture and decoration, the house of Auguste Renoir is reopening in 2013.

The largest public collection of the artist’s works in the world

 Villa et Jardins Ephrussi De Rothschild - ST JEAN CAP FERRAT

This exceptional villa was built by Baroness Ephrussi de Rothschild during the “Belle Epoque”. It is situated on the Cap and overlooks Villefranche. Once you have taken a guided visit of the first floor of the villa, you can meander around the nine magnificent themed gardens which surround the villa. Discover the delights of a typical French garden, the lush vegetation of Spanish and Florentine gardens, the fragrance of the rose garden, the wonders of the exotic garden.

Musée Océanographique de Monaco: Founded in 1920 by Prince Albert 1er, this museum is entirely dedicated to the sea with an aquarium and exhibitions of the Prince's historical collections.
